"As a Chinese culture-oriented Chinese company, we have gone abroad and marched towards the pyramid of the photovoltaic industry, established a global network of talent, specialized technology, quality control, investment and financing. Now we have returned with our innovative photovoltaic power station operation mode which we would like to introduce to everyone and lead the high-quality Chinese services and capital to the overseas end-use market. It is our sincere hope to create a complete photovoltaic industry in China and achieve Chinese PV industry’s globalized high end operation of services and capital with all of our strategic partners. "
Mr. Su Weili, the Chairman and CEO of Sky Solar Holdings Co., Ltd mentioned, a solar photovoltaic industry without core technology and end use capital channel is just unreal bubble even if it has the appearance of prosperity. Due to his perseverance of photovoltaic industry’s best business mode, as a veteran of more than ten years of experiences in the solar photovoltaic industry, Su Weili single-handedly established Sky Solar as a global multinational corporation with photovoltaic as the core and focusing on renewable energy investment and financing projects and development, technology research and development, engineering design, construction, operation and management.
Today's Sky Solar has successfully developed, built, delivered or operated dozens of large open space and commercial rooftop photovoltaic power projects in the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Japan, Greece and other countries. Although achieved great success in foreign markets, from 2009, Su Weili shifted the focus of business back to China, and the newly restructured Sky Solar headquarter was located in Beijing.
"With the domestic industrial policy shift towards downstream application, Sky Solar’s years of experiences in the downstream of the industrial chain mean it will have a promising future in the development and operation of photovoltaic power station." Su Weili said.
Concerns about the Industry Prosperity
In Su Weili’s point of view, although China has become the world's largest producer of solar photovoltaic cells, it still lags far behind many developed countries in the application of solar photovoltaic products. Only 2% to 4% of China's total output of solar photovoltaic products is used in the domestic market each year.
The reason for such dilemma is that China's solar PV industry chain enterprises are concentrated in the middle stream with the lowest added value, the upstream core technologies and raw materials are imported and the downstream end-use markets are abroad. China's solar PV industry still hasn’t shaken off the embarrassing role as the "world factory".
Solar energy has always been the representative of clean energy, green with no pollution. However, some solar photovoltaic manufacturing companies producing such clean energy were regarded as "highly pollutant". In order to reduce investment and reduce costs, when capital enter the solar photovoltaic industry, they do not want to start from the fundamental core technology and are more inclined to "take", directly introducing foreign equipment and technology, or even outdated equipment and technology, resulting in the release of toxic and harmful emissions and waste in the production process and causing severe pollution to air and soil.
The unevenly developed middle stream enterprises, the insufficiency at downstream, coupled with the lack of core technology got Su Weili really concerned about China's solar PV industry. As a Chinese, Su Weili has always wanted to apply his own experiences and the company’s core technology obtained through development of overseas photovoltaic power plants in China, thus boosting domestic solar PV industry chain upgrading.
Opportunities in Industry Upgrading
From the perspective of development strategies at different stages of renewable energy, only when the links such as capital market, government policies, industrial development, and technological advances are closely linked, would it be possible to constitute a long-term sustainable development strategy. Government departments as industrial policy-makers are clearly aware of the weak links in the development of domestic solar PV industry.
To make up for these weak links, from 2009 the Chinese government introduced a series of policies to support and cultivate the application market at the downstream, which enables downstream enterprises with years of experiences such as Sky Solar see a greater development space and arena in the domestic market. At the same time, Sky Solar also completed its global allocation of its core technology R & D team, hoping to introduce global wisdom to China's solar photovoltaic industry.
As of the end of June 2010, Sky Solar has set up a photovoltaic project technical support center in Nuremberg, Germany; it has many experienced engineers and technicians providing a strong quality assurance for the photovoltaic projects’ development, construction, operation and maintenance. It has established a Sky Capital (Europe) corporation and Sky Capital (USA) Corporation in Luxembourg and San Francisco in the United States and they are the global project investment and financing center for Sky Solar. In Changzhou China, it has established PV product supply chain quality control center; its standard and strict quality control of the supply chain can fully reduce investors’ investment risks and shorten the investment return period. In Madrid Spain it has set up a Sky clean energy technology center dedicated to R & D and promotion renewable energy technology products and applications.
